“We are more than sugar”

In the Sugar Cane Agroindustry in Guatemala, we are not only dedicated to sugar production. Our commitment to sustainability and innovation allows us to diversify our products, making the most of every sugar cane resource.

Sugar

During Zafra [Harvest] 2024/25, we achieved a production of 2,620,692 metric tons of sugar. 40% of this production was destined for domestic consumption, while 60% was exported to different markets around the world.

Alcohol

Alcohol is produced from molasses, a residue of sugar manufacturing. We produce up to 65 million gallons of alcohol every year, demonstrating our commitment to reuse and efficiency.

Molasses

Molasses is a by-product obtained during the sugar manufacturing process and used in different industries. After extracting the juice from the cane and crystallizing the sugar, there are honeys rich in minerals such as iron, calcium and potassium, which are known as molasses.

Renewable Energy

By taking advantage of the bagasse of sugar cane, a by-product of the milling process, the mills generate renewable energy that contributes significantly to the country. During the harvest season, Guatemala’s Sugarcane Agroindustry turns sugarcane bagasse into renewable energy, achieving self-sufficiency and supplying more than 25% of the country’s electricity. Including self-consumption, its total generation represents nearly 40% of Guatemala’s electricity matrix.

Each year, this practice prevents up to 4 million tons of CO₂ from reaching the atmosphere, as we replace the use of fossil fuels with a renewable resource.

Other cane products

In addition to sugar, Guatemalan mills make the most of sugar cane to produce a variety of sustainable by-products. These include fertilizers, vinasse, biogas, cachaza, CO₂ and compost, which contribute to agriculture and waste reduction.

Bioplastics, paper and packaging can also be developed from sugar cane, which demonstrates the potential of this crop to generate innovative and environmentally friendly solutions.
