Guatemala now has a new sugar refinery, which was inaugurated at the sugarcane mill, Ingenio Palo Gordo. This facility will allow them to produce 13,500 quintals of refined sugar per day, available in 25 and 50-kilogram packages.

This project will continue to expand with the construction of two additional stations: one for loading trucks with one-ton packages, and another dedicated to the maturation of sugar in a new warehouse, which will have the capacity to repackage sugar into any format.
The inauguration event was attended by executives from Ingenio Palo Gordo, international buyers, Guatecaña directors, authorities, and employees of the mill.

This refinery opens up new commercial opportunities for Ingenio Palo Gordo, as refined sugar is in higher demand worldwide and provides access to new markets. It also strengthens the mill’s circular economy model, with highly efficient production that serves as a development engine, generating over 4,000 direct jobs and becoming a benchmark for waste utilization.
Ingenio Palo Gordo has successfully established a modern, efficient refinery, the result of collective effort, innovation, and the commitment of the technical and professional team involved in the project. In Guatemala, the mills with refineries include Magdalena, Santa Ana, Pantaleon, and La Unión.

In addition to producing sugar, Ingenio Palo Gordo generates renewable energy from sugarcane bagasse, which powers its factory and provides energy to thousands of Guatemalan households. Palo Gordo also stands out for its use of the molasses leftover from the sugar-making process, producing both molasses and alcohol.
It was the first mill in Guatemala to install a distillery for alcohol production from sugarcane molasses.
