Today, with the goal of strengthening the technical skills of local government authorities, Guatecaña—backed by the Astra Institute for Leadership and Governance—launched a training program on Local Governance. The program is specifically designed for mayors, city council members, municipal trustees, and key planning staff from 28 municipal governments across the departments of Escuintla, Santa Rosa, Suchitepéquez, Jutiapa, and Retalhuleu.

The event, which brought together over 100 public officials, took place on August 13–14 at a hotel in Antigua Guatemala. This high-level academic program was created to enhance the technical and practical knowledge of municipal leaders. It provides hands-on tools to help local governments operate more efficiently, transparently, and with a long-term vision to drive sustainable community development.

Luis Miguel Paiz, General Manager of Asazgua.

“We believe that Guatemala’s development also begins at the local level—with prepared and committed leadership. That’s why this training program is our way of supporting mayors and their teams. It’s a valuable opportunity to strengthen capacities, share knowledge, and create spaces that promote more effective, people-centered, and sustainable public management.”

The program was aimed at mayors, first council members, first municipal trustees, municipal planning directors, and other professionals involved in local governance. It offers a unique opportunity to equip decision-makers with practical tools for effective local development and good governance strategies.

Key topics covered included: wastewater management, the roles and responsibilities of municipal governments, pollution control, infrastructure planning, stakeholder engagement, performance metrics for municipalities, strategic communication, and competitiveness indicators, among other priority issues for local administration.

This Local Governance Training Program reflects Guatecaña’s commitment to the sustainable development of Guatemala.
