On August 12, Magdalena, in partnership with MPC Energy Solutions, officially inaugurated Magdalena Solar I, a new solar energy plant located in La Democracia, Escuintla. The plant will generate clean energy annually, enough to power more than 15,000 Guatemalan households.

With an installed capacity of 66 megawatts-peak (MWp)—referring to its maximum generation output—Magdalena Solar I was designed to meet high environmental standards. Built on land previously used for sugarcane cultivation, the facility will produce over 142,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of clean energy each year.

The launch of this solar plant positions Escuintla as a benchmark for renewable energy in the region and expands Magdalena’s diversified energy portfolio. The company currently contributes around 13% of Guatemala’s national electricity supply, through biomass thermal, hydroelectric, and now solar energy.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by President Bernardo Arévalo, Jorge Leal, CEO of Magdalena, as well as government officials and private sector representatives. All highlighted the project’s importance for Guatemala’s energy transition.

“Magdalena Solar I is a platform for sustainable development that strengthens the stability of our energy system, boosts national industry competitiveness, and confirms Guatemala’s potential as a destination for responsible investment,” said Jorge Leal, CEO of Magdalena.

During its construction, the project created temporary jobs with a focus on hiring local residents. It also supported social programs such as solar energy technical training, school workshops on sustainability, and the installation of solar-powered street lighting in La Democracia and La Gomera.
