The Sugar Foundation –Fundazucar– is the social branch of Guatemala’s sugar mills.
Founded in 1990 by the Association of Sugar Producers of Guatemala –Asazgua–, its mission is to improve the quality of life on the South Coast through health and education programs and municipal strengthening.
Sustainable development
Our projects are focused on creating sustainable
solutions that promote community autonomy:
Aimed at students promoting responsibility and respect for the exercise of responsible citizenship from an early age.
In order to contribute to improving local security, we support the creation of Community Prevention Commissions, COCOPRES in 4 departments of the South Coast.
In partnership with Banco Industrial, more than 130 children who participate in football tournaments are supported to promote healthy values and habits.
Governance and community projects
The mills, through Fundazúcar, actively participate in the Departmental Development Councils, CODEDES, Municipal Development Councils, COMUDES and Municipal Food and Nutrition Security Commissions, COMUSAN on the South Coast, presenting key projects in areas such as water and sanitation.
In addition, we promote local governance through initiatives such as:
Provided to 26 municipalities of the South Coast, with the participation of mayors, councilors and staff of the Municipal Directorate of Projects.
Training for the design of projects aligned with the National System of Public Investment –SNIP-, ensuring that they are viable and well structured.
Social programs
Fundazucar works with women, youth, teachers, community leaders and municipal authorities in more than 180 communities to promote development.
Medical clinics of Guatecaña
The medical clinics of Guatecaña, located in Escuintla, provide accessible care in ophthalmology, pediatrics, dentistry, dermatology, nutrition, otolaryngology and general medicine, with consultations starting in Q30 (US $3.75).
In addition, we have complementary services of optics, laboratory, pharmacy, as well as ophthalmologic surgeries. This self-financing program, implemented by sugar mills, serves more than 16,000 patients every year.
Among our outstanding services are community and business health days, focused on prevention and timely health care.
The clinics are located at kilometer 59.5, former road to Taxisco, in front of the emergency of Regional Hospital of Escuintla, with operation hours of Monday thru Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
