In 1992, the sugar cane mills of Guatemala, through the <\/span>Association of Sugar Producers of Guatemala <\/span>–<\/span>Asazgua<\/span>-, <\/span><\/strong>created the<\/span> Guatemalan Center for Research and Training of Sugar Cane –<\/span>Cengica\u00f1a<\/span><\/strong>-.<\/strong> This center is dedicated to promoting technological advancement in the sector, with key research in five programs:\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n \n <\/div>\n \n \n <\/div>\n \n\n\n\n \n <\/div>\n \n \n \n \n \n

Sugar cane varieties program<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Cengica\u00f1a<\/span> develops Guatemalan sugar cane varieties, currently has developed 42 varieties that occupy 65% of the area cultivated under the administration of the mills. These varieties offer higher yields and are also more resistant to diseases and may adapt to climatic variations. The CG02-163 variety is <\/span>the leader<\/span> in extension and productivity.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n \n <\/div>\n \n \n <\/div>\n \n\n\n\n \n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n \n \n \n\n \n\n\n

Precision technology and intelligent agriculture<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Cengica\u00f1a<\/span> uses satellite imagery from the European Space Agency and NASA<\/strong> to <\/span>monitor<\/span> soil moisture and <\/span>determine<\/span> the <\/span>optimal<\/span> maturity of sugar cane for harvest. In addition, it has developed innovative tools such as the <\/span>CengiRiegos<\/span><\/strong> application, which <\/span>optimizes<\/span> the use of water in crops promoting a more sustainable use of water resources.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n \n <\/div>\n \n \n <\/div>\n \n\n\n\n \n <\/div>\n \n \n \n \n \n

Industrial Research<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Cengica\u00f1a\u2019s<\/span> industrial research program <\/span>seeks<\/span> to reduce sucrose and energy losses <\/span>in the process of sugar<\/span> production and electricity generation. Tests are conducted to <\/span>identify<\/span> key areas for improvement and develop specific research projects. The <\/span>goal<\/span> is to <\/span>optimize<\/span> the use of resources, reduce losses and minimize the environmental impact of the process.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n \n <\/div>\n \n \n <\/div>\n \n\n\n\n \n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n

Training and transfer\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Cengica\u00f1a<\/span> is key in training the collaborators of the Sugar Cane Agroindustry, through symposia, specialized committees and technical events that allow the mills to <\/span>benefit<\/span> from the latest technologies developed. These activities include field tours and participation in national and international congresses, strengthening knowledge exchange and the implementation of innovations in the sector.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
